Shine On
1. Drunk With A Dream. “Daddy why do ya have to be so fuckin’ drunk”. This techno song is some stuff I had laying around from back in the day. The music is kinda “kid like” or playful… Or that’s my take on it. I recorded Courtney from an idea I had from a true story during the summer of 2007…When she actually asked me that question while I was drowning a case of Red Stripe.
2. Sweet Junkie Romance. This is one of the first songs I ever wrote… I was about 20 year old at the time and was running with the “coke” crowd in the 80’s. When asking for product over the phone we used the term “white.” The song was recorded in one take mistakes and all… The “hiss” on the record is actually the computer fan… Not tape noise…This is digital folks.
3 Running with Drugs. “The police are everywhere”. Techno. The drug game means breaking the law. And possibly going to lock down for a long time if caught…. This was always one of my biggest fears… Even tho I know lots of dealers I never jumped in with both feet… The short guitar riff is from “The Police” Message in a bottle…Which gave me the idea for Courtney’s line in the song…
4. Holiday. “Glory Hallelujah Land” This is a Christian song I wrote in the 90’s It was recorded in Claremore OK on a friends 8 track digital recorder…. I am doing some of the guitars and dig those “Keith Moon” sounding drum riffs. He brought in a guy from his church to do the lead on the tracks…
5. Whiskey Drinking whiskey to the things she said. This techno song is about something I actually used to do… Drunk with a dream indeed… Mind wondering about the things “she” says. The end of the track is the actual song which was a crowd favorite when I used to gig an open mike at the eclipse hipster club back in the day…
6. Insanity Land. “Village of the Damned” Wrote this one in Memphis in early sobriety. It’s full of despair as of what I was feeling at the time. I was attempting to purge my soul of the evil of the sauce. If ya know what I’m saying… Haunting little chord progression…. “I lost my soul… With no where to go”…
7. Spiritual Aliens I like outer space sounding music. I have known some folks over the years that are into space ships and aliens. They were often “spiritual” people… Like witchcraft or occult activities.. These things seem to go hand in hand…Which is what inspired this techno song.
8. Reflections on Sunday Wrote this one after returning to Tulsa from Memphis. I have several recordings of the song on analog… I decided to attempt to do the song with just a guitar and loops to see how it would come out…This was the result. Check that last lyric… “Super Bowl Funday” That “celebration” that closes church’s one Sunday night per year…
9. Looking for Love In all the “right” places. Another song I wrote in Memphis. It goes hand in hand with the misery of coming down off drugs and booze. To “see what’s on TV and remember nothing” is real for me… I had no idea how to live while totally outta control with cesspools to suck… Being a junkie is a lonely place….
10. Labels “Lay my cards on the table” Another song I wrote years ago and recorded in the fall 2007 with guitar and loops. It’s about the illusions of life’s events… And then talking about them. And trying to be the coolest guy in the room… But actually falling apart. Motives and memories…. Think, think, think….
11. My One and Only – Wrote this one for my first daughter Zoey when she was a baby…. Hence the lyric of the “Beal Street Lights” which is the famous blues strip in downtown Memphis… I have one written for Courtney too but still not gotten around to laying it down in a recording..
